and seem to make promise of meeting again tomorrow

5th July 2024

"Chinese netizen shared an interesting duck friendship online: every day the neighbour's ducks come to his door and call for their friends.

Then all 11 ducks go to the river together.

Sometimes they wait for each other on the road if some of them lag behind.

At sunset, the ducks part ways reluctantly and seem to make promise of meeting again tomorrow."

_______

Inspired by a short video from People's Daily China about a group of ducks who would meet up together every morning and go to play at the river. These tracks imagine a day in the life of those ducks.

Recorded over around four years, this tape also takes great inspiration from some of my favourite music from Africa, especially mbira, highlife and soukous, combining both original pieces influenced by these styles and some remixes and covers of particular favourites.

Note on the various samples and sources used:

  • Track iv is an interpretation of the Shona mbira song 'Karigamombe'
  • Track v is a remix of 'Rhoda' by Soukous Stars
  • Track vi samples part of the 1991 Gatorade commercial #BeLikeMike
  • Track vii is a cover of Jonah Sithole and the Deep Horizone's rendition of the Shona song 'Torai Mapadza'
  • Track viii by Dareen Mohamad, a kalimba interpretation of the Karen Dalton song 'In The Evening (It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best)'
